FLA Events Line

The Foothills Library Association provides the Events Line as a service to the library community, primarily in Calgary, Alberta, and the surrounding area, but also includes events of interest to library workers in the rest of the Prairie Provinces, British Columbia and the North. It is a free service to you can use to advertise your local library’s or library associations’ events.

Although the Events Line service is free and run by volunteers (like the Jobline), your membership fees help to support it. If you are not a member, we encourage you to obtain a $25 yearly membership. More information may be found on the Membership page.

The Events Line lists library related events at the professional, technical, and community levels. It is updated daily as submissions are found or received. To list an event, e-mail the relevant information as text in the body of the message and not as an attachment to events@fla.org. Please note that because of the very high risk of receiving a virus through email attachments, they will not be accepted.

The Foothills Library Association reserves the right to choose whether or not to post events on its Events Line. Please try to include all the necessary information in your events posting as will not be able to contact groups for clarification. For questions about the Events Line, send an e-mail to events@fla.org.

GELA and CASLIS Annual Spring Banquet

GELA (Greater Edmonton Library Association) and CASLIS (Canadian Association of Special Libraries and Information Services) are very excited to be co-hosting our Annual Spring Banquet.

This year's speaker is Eve Poirier, Co-ordinator Library Services at Norquest College.

In Southern Sudan, they consulted with stakeholders to determine need and to develop a framework and timeline for development of a new legal library for this, relatively, new nation. Eve will speak on the myriad of challenges including the extreme heat, obtaining legal resources after 19 years of Sudanese civil war, and dealing with goats in the library. She will also tell us about the solutions that were come to and what she took away from her involvement in working with the legal community in Southern Sudan.

Date: Wednesday, May 6th, 2009.
Drinks and pre-dinner snacks will be available from 5:30 to 6:00.
Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm. A cash bar will be available.

Ulla de Stricker

Afternoon Workshop: WHAT PLANET(S) ARE WE ON? Techniques for discovering clients' actual perceptions and practices - and our resulting opportunities

While the term 'information audit' may sound severe to some, it is in fact our gentle business. We need to understand in detail the actual practices knowledge workers follow (or don't) so that we can develop appropriate strategies for our own work and recommendations for the organization's overall approach to information policies and tools. Ulla shows the well proven steps in a process to discover and document what knowledge workers actually do - so that we may derive plans based on reality.

Banquet Presentation: POSITIVE POLITICS-How information professionals can support the organization in creating a healthy workplace

Ulla offers a highlight commentary on simple techniques for fostering an environment where people look forward to coming to work: Key considerations to employ every day in information intensive environments apply to overall interpersonal and hence organizational relations.
