FLA Events Line

The Foothills Library Association provides the Events Line as a service to the library community, primarily in Calgary, Alberta, and the surrounding area, but also includes events of interest to library workers in the rest of the Prairie Provinces, British Columbia and the North. It is a free service to you can use to advertise your local library’s or library associations’ events.

Although the Events Line service is free and run by volunteers (like the Jobline), your membership fees help to support it. If you are not a member, we encourage you to obtain a $25 yearly membership. More information may be found on the Membership page.

The Events Line lists library related events at the professional, technical, and community levels. It is updated daily as submissions are found or received. To list an event, e-mail the relevant information as text in the body of the message and not as an attachment to events@fla.org. Please note that because of the very high risk of receiving a virus through email attachments, they will not be accepted.

The Foothills Library Association reserves the right to choose whether or not to post events on its Events Line. Please try to include all the necessary information in your events posting as will not be able to contact groups for clarification. For questions about the Events Line, send an e-mail to events@fla.org.

Celebrate your freedom to read, view, listen, and play during this
year’s Freedom to Read Week!

Join us at the Stanley A. Milner Library as we share passages from
some of our favourite challenged or banned books and discuss thoughts
about censorship, and the meaning behind freedom to read. Participate
in readings and discussions, or just sit back and listen. Plenty of
draws and prizes to be won including the grand prize of a ‘Bag of
Banned Books’!

Everyone is welcome to share excerpts from papers they have written or
projects they have done on intellectual freedom, or read from
challenged books (we will have selections available for you, or you
can bring your own). Other creative suggestions are encouraged!

If you would like to participate, please email Caroline Land at
cland@epl.ca, or just show up on the night!

All are welcome! Plenty of coffee and refreshments to go around.

Stories: Between Our Fingers

Edmonton Public Library is hosting the premier showing of “Stories: Between Our Fingers” - a short video made by immigrant and refugee youth in Edmonton about their experiences of arriving and adjusting to life in Canada.

In the past five years Canada has welcomed more than 1,100,000 immigrants and refugees; more than 30% are under 20 years old. These youth often get lost between the cracks of society as they struggle to find hope for a new life in Canada. Their stories of alienation and assimilation to Canadian culture are remarkable tales of survival.

Edmonton is a major centre for immigrant and refugee families seeking acceptance into the Canadian multicultural milieu. The Edmonton Immigrant Services Association (EISA), along with the Supporting Culturally Diverse Youth (SCDY) agency have prepared a short film with the cooperation of the CBC to document the challenges faced by Edmonton's immigrant and refugee youth as they integrate into Canadian culture.

Come and share the experiences, enjoy live performances, and engage in discussion with some of Edmonton's immigrant and refugee youth.

When: Saturday, September 20th from 1-3 pm

Where: Stanley A. Milner branch of the Edmonton Public Library
7 Sir Winston Churchill Square
Stanley Milner Library Theatre (basement)
