The Town of Strathmore is a community of over 11,000 people, 40 km east of Calgary with convenient access to the picturesque Bow River. Strathmore Municipal Library is a Member of Marigold Library System, which provides access to over 3 million items though TRAC. Reporting to the Library Board, the Director is accountable for the planning, development, coordination and management of library services in accordance with the policies established by the Board and with relevant legislation. Specific accountabilities for the Director of Library Services are:
  • Assist and participate with the Library Board
  • Assist with annual budget and grant applications;
  • Supervise, manage and provide leadership to Library staff;
  • Manage library programs and functions;
  • Awareness of current library trends;

Qualifications:

Public Services Systems Librarian - University of Calgary - Quatar

*PUBLIC SERVICES SYSTEMS LIBRARIAN - QATAR*

The University of Calgary - Qatar (UC-Q) invites applications for the position of *Public Services Systems Librarian*, which is a full-time 2 or 3 year renewable contingent term academic position. The successful applicant will have to be prepared to relocate to Doha, Qatar in Fall 2009.

*Responsibilities*

The primary objective of the position is to deliver an integrated suite of online information services, tailored to the local needs of faculty, staff, and students in Qatar. Reporting to UC-Q’s Chief Librarian, the Public Services Systems Librarian works closely with two groups: (1) members of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) team at UC-Q and (2) Libraries and Cultural Resources staff at the University of Calgary, including the Coordinator for LCR Support, the Electronic Resources Group, and the Information Technology and Scholarly Communications Department.

As an advocate of the end user in Qatar, duties and responsibilities consist of assessing user needs, envisioning and recommending appropriate web-based services, and representing the end user in the design of a content-rich, well-organized, web-based gateway to the varied collections and services. The position is also responsible for soliciting/providing appropriate web content.

The Public Services Systems Librarian handles the day-to-day management of the library’s collection of online databases and Internet resources. As our contact with the Electronic Resources Group in Calgary, the incumbent is expected to monitor and assess the impact of changes in database access, Web interface, remote access and user authentication to the electronic resources. The incumbent will troubleshoot access problems and monitor overall performance of the electronic products requiring remote access, as well as dealing with direct user requests for assistance. The incumbent is responsible for devising means to measure local cost benefit through statistical reporting and performance measurement.

The incumbent is also expected to serve as part of the library reference and information literacy team to keep current with end user requirements.

As this is an academic staff position, participation and involvement in scholarship, teaching, and service is expected.

*Qualifications*
  • Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited program in librarianship or recognized equivalent
  • Preferably three years relevant experience working in an academic library environment
  • Experience with the development of web-based information services
Current knowledge of new and emerging digital library technologies and standards:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Web interface design principles and of Web site development as it applies to remote access, authentication issues, and database connectivity
  • Ability to plan and solve problems creatively within a collaborative environment
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong commitment to user-focused service
  • Understanding of the information needs of a scholarly research community
  • Interest in scholarship, professional development, and service.
In addition, preference will be given to candidates with international experience or EFL training.

Position: Library Information Specialist/Programmer in Youth Services

Strathcona County Library is looking for a team player dedicated to providing outstanding customer service and to designing and delivering library services and programs that support the literacy, learning and leisure needs of youth and the adults who work with them.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS

Position:
Permanent part-time, working 28 hours per week.
Shift work, days, evenings, & weekends.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide welcoming and professional research and reader's advisory service to patrons of all ages. Competently use a wide range of print and electronic resources to answer patron requests. Recommend materials and sources appropriate to age, reading level, interests and informational needs of patrons.

Use knowledge of literature for youth, child development and learning processes to plan and deliver literacy programs, instructional tours, school presentations and special events that promote lifelong learning to preschoolers, elementary students, and the adults who work with them.

Participate in the development and delivery of large scale programs, such as reading games that contribute to children’s literacy skills and that enhance the library's community profile.

Develop and maintain specific collections according to selection criteria and within budgets. Ensure that collections are current, representative and relevant to the research and reading, listening and viewing needs of children and those working with them.

Develop and distribute publicity through website, newsletters, posters, brochures, booklists and media. As a member of the Youth Services web team, contribute to the development and maintenance of the children’s section of the library website.

Contribute to the organization by participating in cross departmental committees and projects.

QUALIFICATIONS
Undergraduate degree from a university, preferably in Education, or a diploma from a Library Technician program. Children's literature, programming & reference courses required. Equivalent education & experience may be considered.

Ability to conduct an effective reference interview & to use in-depth knowledge of both children's & adult collections to access appropriate print & electronic materials

Demonstrated creativity in the planning and delivery of developmentally appropriate programs and services for children and parents is required. Music, drama and/or storytelling background may be assets.

Competency with library technologies, print and electronic resources and a variety of computer software programs. Previous work with social software and websites is an asset.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are crucial.

Demonstrated team and time management skills are required.

Available for shift work. Willing to drive on rural roads.

Marigold Library System has a full-time position for a cataloguer who will join a productive cataloguing team. The successful candidate will work in Marigold headquarters located in Strathmore, 50 km east of Calgary on Hwy#1. Marigold is part of TRAC – The Regional Automation Consortium – which is an online catalogue and circulation system shared by four regional library systems: Marigold, Northern Lights, Yellowhead and Peace.

The successful candidate, under the direction of the Manager/Cataloguing Services, is responsible for original and copy cataloguing for our member libraries, as assigned. Cataloguers ensure that the records are as complete and accurate as possible according to both Marigold and TRAC standards.

Requirements: Graduate of a recognized Library Technician program and related experience. A driver’s license is preferred. The candidates must have knowledge of and experience using AACR2, LCSH, DDC and MARC records. Experience working in an automated environment is necessary; experience with OCLC is preferred.

Salary: $2821 to $4043 per month, commensurate with experience. Marigold offers a 35 hour work week with an excellent benefit package.

This is a unique position which brings together three different library systems and three different student bodies to create one distinct, customer focused library service. Confluence Campus is a state-of-the-art academic partnership of West Central High School, St. Dominic Catholic High School connected to Red Deer College in the centre of the campus. Together these partners work as a community of learners and educational professionals to offer enriched educational and expanded life-long learning opportunities for the residents of Rocky Mountain House and area. A comprehensive choice of programs makes it easier for families to further their education while remaining in the community. The Library is managed by Red Deer College with direction provided from the two high schools at Confluence Campus.

Confluence Campus has approximately 1000 students, (predominantly high school) and it is located in the beautiful town of Rocky Mountain House, 90 kms west of Red Deer. Rocky Mountain House is a thriving community and situated in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

As a learner focused, customer driven, leading edge library, our mission is to facilitate access and delivery of information, strengthen learning and support teaching for Red Deer College, Confluence Campus and the community. The incumbent will provide in-person and virtual reference service and teach in the library instruction program at Confluence Campus, Rocky Mountain House. As an advocate for the library services at Confluence Campus, the incumbent will collaborate with teachers, faculty, staff and community members to collect appropriate materials to support courses or programs offered at Confluence Campus and Red Deer College. The successful candidate will be a member of the Red Deer College Library Team and manage the Confluence Campus branch library in Rocky Mountain House.

The Confluence Campus Library serves as the hub for RDC’s regional operations in West Central Alberta. The incumbent will also work closely with RDC’s Regional Initiatives Coordinator to support the delivery of post-secondary programs and services to Rocky Mountain House and surrounding communities.

Working within a collaborative team environment, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to lead and coach others and provide direction for the Library service as well as support RDC’s regional initiatives at Confluence Campus.

The Assistant Manager will demonstrate strong managerial skills, creativity, ingenuity, integrity, and a keen appreciation for and understanding of customer service in the execution of her/his duties. The position will play a significant role in the continued development of Regina Public Library’s programs and services. The Manager has line responsibility for assigned branch staff, the Cataloguing and Processing Unit, as well as contacts with vendors, staff, and the general public.

The successful candidate will have a MLIS (or recognized equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program and a minimum of five years of demonstrated management skills in a unionized public services environment. The ability to think strategically and creatively in the planning process and to participate in an evidence-based decision-making environment is expected. A record of on-going professional development activities leading to a broad and in-depth knowledge of library trends, standards, public services and related professional issues is essential.

Cataloguer - Marigold Library System - Strathmore, AB

Marigold Library System has a full-time position for a cataloguer who will join a productive cataloguing team. The successful candidate will work in Marigold headquarters located in Strathmore, 50 km east of Calgary on Hwy#1. Marigold serves 211,000 residents of south central Alberta through 35 member libraries, 14 paperback deposits, and a mail service. See www.marigold.ab.ca.

Marigold is part of TRAC – The Regional Automation Consortium – which is an online catalogue and circulation system shared by four regional library systems: Marigold, Northern Lights, Yellowhead and Peace.

The successful candidate, under the direction of the Manager/Cataloguing Services, is responsible for original and copy cataloguing for our member libraries, as assigned. Cataloguers ensure that the records are as complete and accurate as possible according to both Marigold and TRAC standards.

Requirements: Graduate of a recognized Library Technician program and related experience. A driver’s license is preferred. The candidates must have knowledge of and experience using AACR2, LCSH, DDC and MARC records. Experience working in an automated environment is necessary; experience with OCLC is preferred.

Salary: $2821 to $4043 per month, commensurate with experience. Marigold offers a 35 hour work week with an excellent benefit package.

Responsibilities

Specific duties include:

The Library Systems unit provides information technology and web development leadership for the Library. This includes support for the Voyager integrated library system and related applications, the Library’s web presence and web applications, all Library databases, imaging and print servers, and more than 750 patron and staff computers and printers. Platforms currently in use at Queen’s Library for delivering services include Solaris, Windows and (to a small extent) Linux. All Systems staff (3 librarians and 9 technicians) work closely with other Library units and teams, as well as with Queen’s ITServices staff. The librarians collaborate with the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) Scholars Portal Operations Team which hosts electronic resources using Mark Logic, an interlibrary loan service using VDX, OpenURL linking using SFX and citation management using RefWorks.

The Library is seeking applications for the position of Information Systems Librarian, a new position in the Systems unit.

The Information Systems Librarian furthers the development, delivery, assessment and support of information systems and data stores for which the Library is responsible. This position reports to the Head of Library Systems and works under the guidance of an Associate University Librarian in a team-based environment. Key elements of the position include:

§ Responsibility for the administration, operation and ongoing assessment of the Library’s integrated library system and related interfaces and processes, and emerging data and metadata repositories.

§ Facilitating the integration of Library information systems with other relevant learning, research and administrative systems at Queen’s and on the open web, working closely and collaboratively with Queen’s ITServices, consortial partners, vendors and open source developers on issues of access, authentication and data management.

§ Providing support and technical expertise to Library staff and clients designing and maintaining database and networked applications, and advice for Systems staff as appropriate.

§ Participating in the planning, administration and ongoing assessment of the Library’s suite of information management systems (e.g. link resolver, electronic resource management system, institutional repository, database management system, etc.).

§ Consulting and collaborating with all staff across the Library system, promoting the vision of a team-based learning organization.

The Library continually adapts its services to its evolving environment, therefore change in the responsibilities of this position should be expected.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: An ALA accredited MLIS or equivalent degree, completed or nearing completion. A keen interest in information and communications technologies and demonstrated ability to plan, develop, implement and manage system installations and projects. Evidence of analytic skills to effectively manage data in relational database form. Proven technical abilities and demonstrated knowledge of current applications and utility tools for managing and transferring data between different systems. Working experience with both server and PC-based operating systems and software (Unix and Windows). Knowledge of database technologies and standards with working experience using products such as MS Access, MySQL and Oracle. Experience in application development with one or more programming languages (e.g. PHP, C, Java). Experience developing and administering web-based solutions using a variety of technologies (e.g. Perl, Java, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, XML/XSL). Familiarity with metadata standards and formats for library systems (e.g. MARC 21, Dublin Core, METS, MODS), authentication (e.g. LDAP, Shibboleth) and protocols for search and retrieval, messaging and networking (e.g. Z39.50, EDI, OpenURL, OAI, FTP). Supervisory skills and the ability to train, mentor and motivate staff in an environment that supports the goals of a learning organization. Strong communication, collaborative and interpersonal skills and a strong service orientation. Knowledge of current and emerging technology trends, and awareness of opportunities and challenges for library services and collections. Creativity, flexibility and initiative. Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. Ability to shift responsibilities and priorities in a demanding and rapidly changing environment, and a willingness to take advantage of training and development opportunities.

Preferred: Post-secondary education in computer science or related field. At least two years of relevant work experience. Experience trouble-shooting hardware, software or web technologies. Experience with the Voyager ILS. Familiarity with Linux server environment.

Role and Scope:

Key Responsibilities:
  • Leads in the development of innovative new services involving library systems and scholarly and academic information communication technologies;

The Position
The Medicine Hat Public Library is seeking an energetic, innovative and service-oriented individual for the position of Acting Head of Children’s Services. Library Web Developer

The Central Library is seeking a dynamic Web Developer with hands-on skills as well as the creative and technical vision to help us design a Third Generation Library website. Position is responsible for design, development and management of site functionality; site maintenance; and troubleshooting. Works closely with Library IT team to integrate the hardware and systems required to support our Web platform.

Responsibilities: including but not limited to:
  • Page development and deployment

This position is responsible for the day to day management of digital resources through the use of an Electronic Management System (ERM). This position is responsible for building the Central Library’s image and corporate identity through its publications, its public relations and the promotion of its events and exhibitions.

Head, Arabian and Islamic Heritage Library
Chief administrator for the Arabian and Islamic Heritage Library. Manages its comprehensive conservation program. The Arabian and Islamic Heritage Library is one of the largest research centers in the Middle East and offers access to unique scholarly Arabic books and writings. The Arabic manuscripts include rare documents on science, medicine, astronomy, geometry, algebra, agriculture, engineering and music. The Arabian and Islamic Heritage Library serves as a test bed for the digitization of Arabic materials and a mass digitization project is planned. The Head, Arabian and Islamic Heritage Library works cooperatively with the Central Library staff, in such areas as collection development, technical services, mass digitization, public services programming and outreach.

  • Formulate the Arabic and Islamic Heritage Library’s strategic plan within the context of the Central Library’s strategic goals and the mission of the Qatar Foundation
  • Set program goals; manage the staff of 16; establish priorities for the collections and their preservation
  • Develop and implement policies, specifications, and procedures for the physical care of collections
  • Manage the conservation facilities; oversee complex conservation treatments and arrange for professional conservation services
  • Working jointly with the AD for Library Information Technology department, organize and execute a program of mass digitization for the collections
  • Provide specialized reference services and educational outreach to scholars and the general public
  • Working jointly with the Central Library senior administrative team, develop effective marketing and outreach initiatives to the students of Education City, the residents of Qatar and the international community of scholars
  • Participate in professional activities at a level commensurate to professional level

The Senior Integrated Library Systems (ILS) Librarian is responsible for the overall planning, implementation and management of the Central Library’s ILS in line with the priorities set by the Library management. This position plans, develops and implements improvements to, or expansions of the ILS and its related applications in order to support library users and staff and to assure the integration of the ILS with other systems.

Qualifications
  • ALA accredited MLS or foreign equivalent advanced degree in library or information science
  • 5 or more years experience with the administration of an integrated library system

Provides leadership in the Central Library in the formulation of planning, policies, practices and projects relating to library resource acquisitions. This position plans, implements and manages acquisitions of all library resources for the Central Library. Provides leadership and guidance regarding the rapidly changing legal licensing requirements associated with digital resources. Supervises and coordinates the staff and daily work of the acquisitions team. Liaises with Public Services and Library Information Technology staff to ensure user friendly access to library resources and a positive learning environment.


Qualifications
  • ALA accredited MLS or foreign equivalent advanced degree in library or information science
  • 7 or more years supervisory experience in a technical services acquisitions environment
  • Experience working in a university or research environment preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in the acquisition of all formats
  • Experience with consortium or national licensing of digital resources an asset

PRIMARY PURPOSE: To develop and maintain web-based resources for the discovery and promotion of existing and newly acquired Special Collections materials; supervise training and scheduling of staff in the unit and provide specialized reference assistance.

NATURE OF WORK: Reporting to the Head of the Murray Library, and under broad direction from the Special Collections Librarian, the duties are complex requiring a detailed working knowledge of digital imaging technologies, website design tools, and content management systems. The duties require a deeper and detailed knowledge and understanding of the resources and functions related to the library. Duties involve frequent interaction with faculty, students, and staff. Work is performed with broad direction coming from the Librarian and through established Library policies and practices; considerable judgment and independence is required on a daily basis.

TYPICAL DUTIES: Undertakes work on a wide variety of digitization projects, including captioning and/or providing subject headings and/or metadata and scanning materials; creates and modifies websites to promote existing or newly accessioned special collections materials; creates customized CONTENTdm user interfaces for different collections; prepares and uploads digital content to CONTENTdm; catalogues websites and finding aids; creates RAD compliant Encoded Archival Descriptions for acquisition of archival materials; catalogues manuscript collections; provides information/research services to faculty, students, and staff; instructs clients in the use of the library search systems, with particular emphasis on finding aids for unique collections and also including the Library catalogue, electronic resources and the intranet; advises clients on the most appropriate tools and research strategies for their research/information needs; supervises a team of two Library Assistants and assists with training and performance assessment; assists with communicating, revising and updating Special Collections policies and procedures; ensures the efficient operation of functions related to circulation, reserve and technical processing; collaborates and liaises with the Special Collections Librarian and other Library departments as necessary; and other special projects and duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education: An undergraduate degree (preferably in the humanities) and/or a Library Technician Diploma or other relevant post-secondary education (an equivalent combination of relevant post-secondary education and experience may be considered).

Experience: Extensive expertise with website design, digital imaging, and content management software (e.g. CONTENTdm, dSpace); demonstrated experience with Dublin Core metadata structure including the application of subject headings and physical description; experience and demonstrated effectiveness in supervising others; relevant related experience in an academic library; experience with and demonstrated effectiveness in providing information services in an academic setting; demonstrated proficiency with relevant Innovative Millennium modules, the Library website, the online public catalogue, library databases, UWHO, and other online information sources; experience using Microsoft Office applications in a networked library environment.

The Butler Hill Group, a virtual computational linguistics consulting company based in the United States, is a streamlined network of language experts, including computational linguists, computer scientists, and language and web search experts with expertise in the natural language issues of computer technology. The Butler Hill Group has an immediate need for Canadian Data Annotators to review and evaluate internet search results, in the Canadian English language, based on specific search terms and provide either a favorable or unfavorable rating depending on the relevance of the result to the search term. The evaluation work is done according to specific guidelines using an automated tool.

Candidates must be native Canadian English speakers, living in Canada. Rural Branch Supervisor - Paliser Regional Library - Moose Jaw, SK

Palliser Regional Library Board is seeking a self motivated, service oriented librarian to manage, supervise and develop the activities of the 20 rural branch libraries. As a member of the Management Team, the Rural Branch Supervisor is responsible to the Director. Evening and weekend work is required. The position starts August 4, 2009.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and co-ordinate library services in the rural branches.
  • Assist in the development of a training package for use with the new Encore and the Millennium ILS by Innovative Interface System which is scheduled to go live in December of 2009.
  • Ongoing train staff in use of Innovative Interfaces Inc. (III) system
  • Assist and advise branch staff on internal automation/computer issues
  • Train staff on use of online databases, Overdrive and other automated library products.
  • Supervise the maintenance of usage records for all branches (online, III, inventory etc.)
  • Determine local needs and assist communities in evaluating and refining local services.
  • Act as advisor to the local library boards and meet with municipal councils.

Aboriginal Liaison Librarian - University of Winnipeg - Winnipeg, MB

The Aboriginal Liaison Librarian has the task of leading the Library in its assistance to and support for Aboriginal students and courses pertaining to First Nations, Métis and Inuit issues. This includes all of the courses in the Aboriginal Governance Program (which is now offering both graduate and undergraduate courses), but also courses in other departments such as Anthropology, History and Politics and courses offered through the Division of Continuing Education. This librarian will assist the University of Winnipeg in strengthening its profile within the First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities and will also contribute to the services provided by the University of Winnipeg Library.

Duties and responsibilities:
- To provide instruction in information literacy and research skills for Aboriginal students enrolled in both the University of Winnipeg’s credit courses and in the courses taught through the Division of Continuing Education in which a significant number of Aboriginal students are registered
- To provide collections development support to courses pertaining to Aboriginal issues as well as to serve as a collections subject liaison for other designated departments
- To provide introductory information literacy and research skills to Aboriginal students in secondary education institutions with which the University of Winnipeg has established a relationship
- To develop the Library’s research guides and other instructional and research resources that pertain to Aboriginal issues and to other departments, as needed
- To assist with the University’s “Introduction to University” and “Introduction to Post-Secondary Education”courses
- To provide reference assistance, in person and online, together with other librarians
- To establish a close working relationship with the Aboriginal Student Services Centre and other similar centres on campus, to ensure that the library and information needs of Aboriginal students are identified and that programs and services are in place to meet these needs
- To contribute to overall Library planning and to serve on the Librarians’ Council and other committees and task forces

Qualifications:

Library Assistant - Calgary Board of Education - Calgary, AB

Under the direction of the teacher-librarian or the designated member of the teaching staff and the school Principal, assists Calgary Board of Education (CBE) students, teaching staff and parents in the use and operation of school library resources. This position provides support services to the School Team to create an effective and positive learning environment for CBE students. As a member of the Library Team, this position is accountable for providing effective and accurate assistance to CBE students, staff and parents, for coordinating the circulation of school library resources in a timely and efficient manner and, in conjunction with teaching staff, for building/maintaining an affinity for library learning resources for CBE students, while maintaining the positive learning environment of the library.

Responsibilities:
1. Assists Calgary Board of Education (CBE) students and teaching staff in the access and use of the school library resources such as electronic search techniques and the location of school library resources.
2. Circulates school library resources and prepares overdue lists using either automated or manual processes. Pockets, cards and shelves returned school library resources and maintains circulation records as required.
3. Assists CBE students and teachers in the operation, use and maintenance of a computerized school library automation system (OPAC/CIRC) and of the district’s Media Reservation System. This includes access to the appropriate databases with technology and the maintenance, accuracy and currency of the library catalog database at the school level. Where applicable, assists in the maintenance and use of the school library card catalog.
4. In consultation with the teaching staff, monitors students in the library during the absence of the teacher-librarian or designate to maintain the positive learning environment of the school library. Keeps the school library facility open in the absence of the teacher-librarian or another member of the teaching staff.
5. Maintains all management and organizational files such as vertical files, periodical files, business and financial records, electronic catalogs, etc.
6. Coordinates the activities of school library volunteers and student assistants. Provides consistent and effective support to the school library volunteers and to the student assistants.
7. Completes verified order forms for school library resources and supplies. Prepares totals and codes to the appropriate accounts. May verify receipt or cancellation of resources and/or supplies and adjust budget records as required.
8. Assists in the operation and preventative maintenance of school library equipment. Maintains records of school library equipment servicing for each machine.
9. Prepares routine correspondence, memos, notices, pockets, sign-out cards, periodicals, catalogue card sets, bibliographies and suggestion slips for new school library resources.
10. Receives, distributes, collects and returns resources from special collections within the CBE system. Processes interlibrary loans according to established procedures.
11. Assists in the coordination of inventory of all school library resources and supplies. May compile circulation statistics as required. Coordinates the new resources by numbering, stamping, pocketing, bar-coding, and recording accession numbers, files, shelf listing of cards and card sets in the card catalogue. May coordinate the school library volunteers and/or school Library Pages in completing the inventory of school library resources and supplies where applicable.
12. Makes minor repairs to school library print resources. Processes books for rebinding in accordance with established CBE and school-specific procedures.
13. Where applicable, assists students and staff in the basic use of software applications, such as word processing etc., on personal computers housed inside of the school library.
14. Prepares displays and promotional materials as requested. May assist with promotional activities (e.g. book fairs, visiting authors, etc.).
15. Responsible for remaining abreast in the area of school library information resources as well as the associated skills required as they relate to major responsibilities.
16. Performs other related responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
High school completion supplemented by courses related to major responsibilities. One year of related experience in a library environment, preferably in a school setting. An equivalent combination of directly related education or directly related experience may be considered. Proficiency in word processing applications. Demonstrated electronic search technique skills. Accurate keyboarding skills an asset. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated interpersonal skills with a strong customer service orientation. The Position
The Medicine Hat Public Library is seeking an energetic, innovative and service-oriented individual for the position of Acting Head of Children’s Services. The Acting Head of Children’s Services is responsible for the development and provision of a full range of library services for children up to and including the age of 12, their families, and others interested in collections and programs for children. The Acting Head of Children’s Services is a non-union position reporting directly to the Chief Librarian. The Acting Head of Children’s Services directly supervises Children’s Services staff.

Reporting to the Information, Research and Training Service Manager, the Edmonton Librarian is accountable for organizing and managing effective and efficient operations of the five Law Libraries located in Edmonton. These libraries include The Law Society Library, two Judicial Libraries and two Ministry of Justice Libraries.

The Edmonton Librarian is the primary contact for Alberta Law Libraries' client services in Edmonton and is responsible for facilitating timely and relevant legal reference, research and training services to the bar, judiciary, government lawyers and the public. This position also provides the opportunity for participation in strategic planning and developing and implementing policy.

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Strong human resources management skills and proven leadership capabilities
  • Highly developed communication, interpersonal and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of information technology, including library systems, computers, web development and database management.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies in the library field.
  • Strong project management skills including knowledge of strategic planning and project management practices and techniques.
Qualifications:
Masters in Library and Information Studies (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA accredited institution with considerable years of progressively responsible professional experience involving reference/research services instruction. Law library experience or legal training, as well as supervisory/management experience, are preferred. Equivalencies will be considered.

The Saskatchewan Health Information Resources Partnership (SHIRP) seeks out, negotiates, licenses, finances, and makes available for use, electronic health information resources for healthcare practitioners in the province of Saskatchewan. The SHIRP Outreach Services Librarian provides library instruction and reference services to healthcare practitioners, and is involved in promoting and marketing SHIRP.

Accountabilities of the Position
This position reports to the Head of the Health Sciences Library, with guidance provided by the SHIRP Executive Committee.

Librarians, as faculty, are assigned duties aligned with the practice of professional skills in the Library Standards for Promotion and Tenure (2003, as amended). Duties may cover the development of the collections, organizing collections, teaching information research skills, information services, information technology, administration, and research/scholarly work.

Practice of Professional Skills
The University Library follows the liaison librarian model, which includes reference, instruction, and collections responsibilities to support on-site and distributed teaching, learning, and research. As part of the Health Sciences library team, this position supports all health sciences disciplines.

Liaison
  • Liaise with health professionals in the health regions and the individual health professionals across the province. This includes consulting with distance healthcare professionals and monitoring their information access needs.
  • Work closely with University of Saskatchewan librarians and staff, Health Region librarians and staff, the Provincial Library, and healthcare practitioners.
  • Work closely with the SHIRP Coordinator.
Development of the Collections
  • As part of the SHIRP Executive Committee, highlights collection products for consideration based on feedback from SHIRP client groups.
Information Services
  • Plan and implement reference and instructional services including a health information literacy program for the SHIRP community, which includes University of Saskatchewan students on placement, Health Region personnel, and individual healthcare practitioners.
  • Work with healthcare practitioners with varying levels of technical knowledge in health regions with varying degrees of computerization.
  • Design and implement evaluation instruments to analyze the impact of service and make recommendations for further developments and enhancements.

Teaching Information Research Skills

  • Provide group and individual information research instruction to healthcare practitioners in health regions across the province. This includes providing library services to locations beyond the campus.
  • Develop instructional and training materials in print, web-based, and interactive formats using e-learning technologies where appropriate.
  • Follow-up with healthcare professionals to ensure successful integration of information literacy skills into evidence-based practice.

Research and Scholarship
  • Research and scholarship activity is a key component of the practice of professional skills. Librarians are expected to engage in research and scholarly work leading to the development of a formal program of research, and actively disseminate research results via peer-reviewed outlets.
Administration, public service, and outreach are also assigned duties within the Library Standards for Promotion and Tenure. These include active participation in collegial Library and University committees as required by rank as well as in academic or professional organizations.


Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
A Masters of Library Science or equivalent degree from a university/institution recognized by the University of Saskatchewan is required. Educational background or library experience in science related disciplines is an asset.

Duties of this position include:
