Information Technology Librarian - Mount Royal Library - Calgary, AB

Mount Royal Library requires a professional librarian with demonstrated information technology expertise to fill a tenure track continuing position effective August 15 2009.

Mount Royal Library has a full-time staff of 50, including 13 faculty librarians. The Library provides a technology-rich facility, a leading-edge information literacy program and a full range of on-site and virtual services and resources. The collection comprises 180,000 monographs and over 33,000 serial titles in digital and print formats. The Library supports over 12,000 full and part-time students and over 1,900 faculty and staff. Mount Royal offers baccalaureate degrees in a range of subject areas. As a student-centred, instruction-focused post-secondary institution, Mount Royal offers an exceptional student experience and educational programming informed by scholarship.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working with information technology in a post-secondary library setting in order to provide access to information and support the teaching, learning and scholarship endeavours of the institution. The position will provide leadership in IT development and innovation within the Library and liaise with the centralized campus IT unit. Responsibilities for staff supervision as well as project coordination are also part of this position. As a member of the Library’s liaison team, the candidate will have the opportunity to deliver curriculum-integrated information instruction, reference work and take on collection development responsibilities.

Current and/or ongoing IT library activities include the operation and management of the ILS, integrated electronic resource access, website development in a CMS environment, and enhanced integration with campus-wide systems (e.g. Banner). The candidate will provide leadership in IT projects including infrastructure related initiatives, (e.g. identity management/single sign-on), implementing and/or developing tools for instruction and user engagement, such as social networking and Web 2.0 capabilities, and information/format integration, (e.g. federated searching, streaming video, institutional repository).

New faculty are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/scholarship/service pattern has a focus on teaching with the requirement that the faculty member be involved in a research program as well as service to the Mount Royal community. The teaching /service pattern has a focus on teaching and service only. There is an option to change work patterns after tenure.

Applications for this position must have an ALA accredited Masters Degree in Library/Information Science or equivalent. Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Experience in managing, planning and leading the operation and development of systems, staff and resources that support the access to and delivery of content
  • Active involvement in the deployment and/or design of IT projects in academic settings
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, networking and team work skills
  • Ability to motivate and develop staff
  • Evidence of success in project coordination
  • 3 – 5 years experience in information systems , preferably in an academic environment
